Actor, comedian, and television personality best known for his roles in films such as Harlem Nights, Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop 2. He also starred on the television special What's Alan Watching? and hosted HBO's Uptown Comedy Express, which helped launch the careers of comedians such as Chris Rock and Arsenio Hall.

Before Fame

In the early 1940s, he formed the comedy duo "The Comedy of Roy and Ray" with his brother. He also co-founded the doo wop group "The Akrons" with Eugene Pitt.

He briefly worked as nephew Eddie Murphy's head of security detail.

He is the uncle of comedians Eddie Murphy and Charlie Murphy.
