It was the movie that launched her career, but Barry Levinson was the only person on board that wanted to hire Barkin. The producer and the studio filming the movie were not interested in the stage actress because they did not feel she had the right look. I guess she showed them.

Before she went into acting, Barkin had other dreams. They were very nice dreams; she dreamed of being an ancient history teacher. However, that did not work out for her but acting did.
