When LL Cool J was 16 years old, in 1984, Def Jam Recordings, a young company owned by New York University students Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin, issued his debut record, “I Need a Beat.” More than 100,000 copies of the track were sold, helping to make Def Jam Recordings and LL Cool J household names in the music industry.
